The experience
The tour leaves Bucharest and moves through four distinct regions over four days. Day one takes you north to Snagov Monastery (where monks allegedly buried Vlad the Impaler), then to Peles Castle, the Romanian royal family's summer residence, and Sinaia Monastery, a 300-year-old Orthodox sanctuary called the Cathedral of the Carpathians. You overnight in Brasov, a mountain resort town surrounded by the Carpathians.
Day two is a Brasov city break with time for lunch in the Old Town, then a drive to Bran Castle, the fortress most tourists associate with Dracula, and Rupea Fortress, a Saxon medieval stronghold perched on a 120-meter basalt cliff. Day three starts in Sighisoara, the 1280-built citadel where Vlad the Impaler was born. You tour the Clock Tower and Arms museum inside the living medieval fortress. Then comes Biertan Fortified Church, a UNESCO site ringed by three defensive walls and seven bastions, and Alba Iulia's Alba Carolina citadel, a seven-pointed star fortress designed by the French engineer Vauban. You sleep in Sibiu.
The final day in Sibiu includes a city tour of the European Capital of Culture, then the route splits by season: July through October, you drive the Transfagarasan Highway, the mountain road Top Gear called the most beautiful in the world, with stops at the Vidraru Dam and views across the reservoir. Outside those months, you visit Calimanesti Natural Springs instead. Either way, you then climb 1,400 steps to Poenari Fortress, Vlad's actual retreat fortress, before returning to Bucharest. Your guide speaks English and handles all hotel bookings, meals, entrance fees for themselves, car expenses and route changes on request.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want a private vehicle and guide for the full four days, since the flexibility to adjust stops and overnight towns, plus the guide's hotel bookings, matter most when traveling with family or a small group. The Transfagarasan Highway is only available July through October. If you're traveling outside those months and the mountain pass is your priority, confirm the spring alternative suits your interests before booking.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Romanian.
What is Poenari Fortress and why is it different from Bran Castle?
Poenari Fortress is the actual stronghold where Vlad the Impaler retreated during Ottoman invasions, reached by climbing 1,400 steps up a mountainside. Bran Castle, the more famous tourist site, is the fortress most associated with the Dracula legend but was not Vlad's primary residence. Poenari is the real historical seat.
Can I drive the Transfagarasan Highway on this tour?
The Transfagarasan Highway is included on the final day only from July through October, when the mountain pass is open. Outside those months, the tour visits Calimanesti Natural Springs instead, a thermal spring site with historical significance.
What does the guide arrange for me before the tour starts?
Your guide books all four nights of accommodation according to your budget, so you arrive at each town with a hotel reserved. The guide also speaks English and remains with you throughout, handling driving, navigation and logistics so you focus on the sites.
How much time do I spend in each medieval town?
Brasov gets a 90-minute break on day two, enough to explore the Old Town and have lunch. Sighisoara and Sibiu each receive a full city tour on their respective days. The itinerary is flexible. Your guide can adjust the pace and stops even after the tour begins.
