The experience
You start from your Bucharest hotel and drive toward the Carpathian Mountains, stopping first at Peles Castle in Sinaia: a 19th-century German Renaissance masterpiece set against the peaks. From there the route climbs to Bran Castle, the 14th-century fortress perched 200 feet above the valley and wrapped in Dracula legend. The day ends in Brasov, where the Black Church, White Tower and Citadel sit within the old walled town framed by Southern Carpathian peaks.
Day two moves deeper into medieval Transylvania. Sighisoara is the only inhabited medieval citadel left in Europe: a UNESCO site where narrow streets and defense towers date to the 14th century, and the Clock Tower offers a panorama from its top. A short detour reaches Viscri, a Saxon village built around a fortified Romanesque church (also UNESCO-listed) where only about 27 Saxons remain among 500 inhabitants. The guide walks you through the 175-step School Stairs and the Church on the Hill, one of Transylvania's three largest churches.
Day three heads west through Biertan, another UNESCO fortified church from the 15th century and one of the strongest of its kind, before arriving in Sibiu. Once the richest of seven German-founded citadels, Sibiu keeps its medieval walls, steep-roofed guild houses and vast squares (Great Square and Little Square), that still dominate the pedestrian-friendly old town. The final morning returns you to Bucharest. If the Transfagarasan Highway is open (July to October), the route crosses the Fagaras Mountains at 2,042 meters via 27 viaducts, bridges and Romania's longest tunnel. Winter departures use Valea Oltului valley instead.

Top questions
What is Bran Castle and why is it famous?
Bran Castle is a 14th-century medieval fortress perched 200 feet above a rock in Transylvania, known as Dracula's Castle because of the legend surrounding it. The tour includes entry and time to explore the castle's rooms and fortifications.
Can I visit Sighisoara's Clock Tower and climb to the top?
Yes. The Clock Tower was built in the 14th century and expanded 200 years later. The tour includes a visit, and you can climb to the top for a panoramic view of the medieval citadel and surrounding landscape.
What happens on the return drive to Bucharest on day four?
The route depends on the season. From July through October, you travel via the Transfagarasan Highway, which crosses the Fagaras Mountains at 2,042 meters and includes 27 viaducts, bridges and a tunnel 887 meters long. Outside those months, the tour uses Valea Oltului valley road instead.
Are the medieval towns in Transylvania still inhabited, or are they museums?
Sighisoara and Sibiu are living towns with residents, shops and restaurants alongside their medieval architecture and fortifications. Viscri is a small working village of about 500 people centered around its fortified church. You walk through active streets and squares, not reconstructed sites.
How much walking is involved each day?
The tour suits all physical fitness levels. Each day includes walking through town centers and up to castle and church entrances, but the pace is set by the guide and there is no strenuous hiking. Transport covers the distances between towns.
