The Experience

The day starts when you climb into the open-air 4x4 at the pickup point. The first stop is Quinta da Regaleira, where you get a half-guided, half-free walk through the palace gardens: the guide shows you the main features, then you're free to wander the grounds and find the hidden initiation wells and grottoes on your own. After that, you pass Sintra National Palace and the front gardens of Seteais Palace as the driver navigates toward the coast.

Lunch happens before the off-road section. You stop at a local spot where you eat traditional Portuguese food and drink wine (the meal is paid in cash, 25–35€ per person). Then the real off-road begins. The 4x4 leaves the paved roads and bounces along forest tracks, swerving past house-sized boulders, pine forests and giant ferns. In summer, the roof comes off and you feel the wind. In cooler months, the roof stays on, the music plays, and you splash through mud puddles. You pass Monserrate Palace from the road and stop at hidden beaches for a walk on the sand.

The tour ends at Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe's westernmost point, where the cliffs drop to the Atlantic. You get time to walk and photograph the view, then the driver takes you to Cascais train station for the drop-off. Along the way, you taste travesseiro pastry and homemade ginja liqueur. The 4x4 comes equipped with smartphone chargers, blankets, umbrellas and sunscreen. You also get a free Polaroid photo to take home and bottled water throughout the day.
