Sintra’s wild coast, off-road trails and fairytale palaces in one day

You’ll rattle along Sintra’s old tram lines in a classic jeep, taste salty Colares wine straight from Portugal’s oldest cellar, stare out over wild Atlantic cliffs at Azenhas do Mar, and end up wandering Pena Palace’s surreal terraces with a local guide who feels more like a friend than anything official.

6h–7h

The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the jeep rattled over those old tram tracks just outside Sintra. It’s not quiet — you feel every bump — but there’s something about being up high, hair whipping around, that makes you grin even if you weren’t planning to. Our guide Pedro waved at a farmer by the roadside and pointed out the vines — “Colares grapes only grow here,” he said, like it was some kind of magic. We stopped at this old cooperative winery (it smells faintly of musty barrels and cool stone), and I tried a sip that was saltier than any wine I’ve had before. Not sure I’d order it at home, but it stuck with me.

After that, we wound down these narrow roads toward the Atlantic. The sea air hit us before we could see anything — sharp and cold even in June. Azenhas do Mar just appears all at once: white houses clinging to cliffs, waves smashing below. We watched an old man pull in nets from a natural pool while Pedro told us stories about smugglers hiding here ages ago. Lunch was wherever we felt hungry (I ended up with grilled sardines and too much bread), then back into the jeep for more off-road jolting through Sintra-Cascais park. There’s this so-called “secret spot” they take you to — don’t ask me where it is, because I honestly couldn’t find it again if I tried. But standing there with wind howling around us and nobody else in sight… yeah, I still think about that view sometimes.

Pena Palace came last — which is good because nothing really tops those colors in late afternoon light. Our group shuffled through the arches while Pedro explained why everything looks like a cake (his words). It’s busy but somehow doesn’t matter; you’re too distracted by turrets popping out of mist and tiles that look painted yesterday. By the time we got dropped off back in Sintra’s center (with Pedro scribbling food tips on my map), my shoes were full of sand and my brain was buzzing from all of it. If you want tidy or predictable, this isn’t your tour — but if you want real stories and a bit of chaos mixed in with your day trip to Sintra from Lisbon, well…

What’s included
