The Experience

“You’re not from Lisbon, are you?” our guide grinned as we tried (and failed) to pronounce “Azenhas do Mar” correctly. The morning had already started with that soft, misty air Sintra is famous for. I swear it smells different here, like damp stone and eucalyptus. We climbed into this old convertible jeep (I picked it over the classic car because, well, I wanted to feel the wind) and headed straight up those winding mountain roads. At some point I realized my hair was a lost cause, but honestly, who cares when Pena Palace suddenly pops out of the trees in all those wild colors? We stopped at Fonte da Sabuga for water: apparently “miraculous,” though it tasted mostly cold and metallic to me. There was this older woman filling up bottles. She nodded at us but didn’t say much. The drive back wound through more villages than I could count. By then I’d stopped checking my phone for time. You can finish in Sintra center or get dropped at the train station. We chose the center because I wanted one last pastel de nata before heading off.
