The Experience

The day starts with pickup in the Lisbon area, then heads into Sintra's mountains where five palaces and a medieval castle spread across the hillside. Your guide walks you through the town and its surroundings, explaining the architecture and history of each stop. Pena National Palace sits highest, appearing through the fog in shades of yellow, red and blue: a Romantic-era landmark that crowns the range. Sintra National Palace, used by Portuguese royalty for centuries, shows off medieval, Gothic and Manueline styles all at once. Quinta da Regaleira draws visitors into its gardens and the famous Initiation Well, a spiral staircase descending into the earth. Moorish Castle's walls wind up the ridge between rocks and cliffs, offering views down to the town, the palace and the ocean beyond. Monserrate Palace mixes Gothic, Indian and Moorish details and sits surrounded by botanical gardens.

After the palaces, the route heads west to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Portugal and Europe, where the land ends and the Atlantic stretches to the horizon. The final stop is Cascais, a fishing village on the coast with white houses, beaches and 19th-century palaces by the sea. Transport between all stops is private and air-conditioned. The guide stays with you outside the monuments, and bottled water is provided throughout the day. The tour ends back in Lisbon.

Monument entries are not included in the base price. You choose which palaces to enter at checkout. The tour adapts to weather and your preference: the vehicle can be a 9-seat van, a smaller car or a Portuguese UMM jeep, depending on conditions and what suits the group. Ginjinha, a traditional Portuguese cherry liqueur, is offered in a chocolate cup during the Sintra stop, though other snacks and meals are on your own.
