The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the morning light hit Pena Palace: like someone spilled gold paint over those wild colors. We’d barely left Lisbon when our guide, João, pointed out how the mist clings to Sintra’s hills even on a dry day. He laughed at my pronunciation of “Quinta da Regaleira” (I tried), then told us stories about kings hiding from plagues up here. I didn’t expect to feel so much history underfoot or to laugh as much as we did trying pastries with names I couldn’t pronounce. The whole day felt both grand and oddly personal: maybe because João seemed to know every shortcut and story. It wasn’t perfect (I dropped custard on my shirt), but I’d do it again tomorrow just for that early morning drive through Sintra’s hills.
