The Experience
“Don’t worry, we’ll skip the worst of the crowds,” said Joana, our guide, as we wound up toward Sintra. She was right—by the time we reached Quinta da Regaleira, it felt like we’d slipped into some half-dream. The stone paths were still damp from last night’s fog, moss soft underfoot, and I caught this faint scent of wet earth mixed with something floral (maybe those wild hydrangeas everywhere?). We laughed at my attempt to pronounce “Regaleira”—Joana just grinned and let me try again. There’s something about seeing those towers appear through the trees that makes you feel like you’re in on a secret.
The old town of Sintra itself is all pastel houses and tiny bakeries—our stop for coffee was quick but warm, and I swear the custard tart tasted different here. Maybe it’s just being away from Lisbon’s rush. Joana filled us in on palace stories while we looked out over tiled rooftops; she knew every shortcut around the tourist lines, which honestly saved us hours. If you want Pena Palace instead, you have to plan ahead—tickets go fast for early entry (she warned us more than once), so we stuck with Regaleira this time. No regrets there.
The drive out to Cabo da Roca was quieter than I expected—just wind and gulls overhead, cliffs dropping off into pale blue haze. Standing at Europe’s western edge felt oddly small and huge at once. Then Cascais: fishing boats bobbing near the marina, old men playing cards by the sea wall, sunlight bouncing off whitewashed walls. It’s not showy but there’s this easy charm; I could’ve sat by the water for hours if we hadn’t needed to head back. Still think about that salty breeze sometimes.
