The experience

The day starts at your hotel in Lisbon, where the driver picks you up and heads north into the forested hills of Sintra. The first stop is Pena Park, where the trails wind through dense vegetation before opening onto Pena National Palace: a 19th-century Romanticist castle perched at the top of Sintra Mountain. You walk inside to see the eclectic Neo-Manueline, Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance rooms, including the extravagant bedrooms that once served as the royal family's summer retreat. The palace sits high enough that the views back across the forested slopes frame the whole stop.

After the palace, you have free time in Sintra town itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can grab lunch or wander into the local pastry shops for queijada or travesseiro: two traditional Portuguese sweets. If you want to tour Sintra National Palace, a medieval royal residence occupied from the 15th to 19th centuries, that entrance is optional and paid separately. From town, the route heads west to Roca Cape (Cabo da Roca), Europe's westernmost point, where the rocky bluffs drop to the Atlantic and the light is sharp enough for photographs. A brief stop at Guincho Beach follows: a working surf spot where the water moves fast.

The final leg swings south along the coast to Cascais, a former fishing town that has become a seaside getaway. You walk the narrow streets with your guide, passing the white houses with terracotta roofs, and end up at the beach where you can sit in the sand and look out over the ocean. How long you stay depends on the weather and the tide. On the drive back to central Lisbon, the route passes through Estoril, another coastal town, before dropping you at your hotel.
