The Experience
“You know, people used to call this place a fairy tale that got lost in the woods,” Pedro said as we squeezed past a bakery in Sintra’s historic center. I’d never seen so many pastel buildings packed together—tiles everywhere, even on the benches. The air smelled like pastry sugar and wet stone (it rained last night), and Pedro kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: a tile with a chipped corner, an old man waving from his window. We had to pick just one palace—harder than it sounds. I went for Quinta da Regaleira because Pedro promised “something weird in the gardens.” He wasn’t kidding; there’s an underground spiral you can walk down, damp and echoey, and when you look up you see light coming through ferns. It stuck with me more than I expected.
Lunch was by the sea at Azenhas do Mar—a village that looks like it’s clinging to the cliffs for dear life. The Atlantic wind here is no joke; my hair was basically horizontal. We watched waves crash into the natural pool below while eating grilled fish (so fresh it almost felt rude). Afterward we drove through the Serra de Sintra—twisty roads, mossy trees—and then suddenly there was Cabo da Roca: “the end of Europe,” as Pedro put it, grinning like he’d been waiting all day to say that. It’s windy enough to steal your hat if you’re not careful. There’s a lighthouse and a little café where I warmed my hands on coffee and tried to imagine what sailors must’ve felt seeing nothing but ocean ahead.
The drive down to Praia do Guincho made me wish I surfed—there were maybe six people out there braving the waves while everyone else huddled behind their car doors. Boca do Inferno came next; you actually feel the ground shake when waves hit those rocks. Some local kids were daring each other to get closer for photos (their moms yelling from up top). By then I was tired but happy—Cascais is all sun-bleached walls and busy little shops selling everything from sardine tins to hand-painted mugs. We wandered without much purpose, just soaking up the late afternoon light.
