The Experience

If you've landed in Lisbon and want to see Sintra's famous palaces without renting a car or navigating a crowded bus, this tour solves the logistics. A driver picks you up and handles the route while you choose which two monuments suit your pace: Pena Palace sits on a hilltop with views over the region and the Moorish Castle, but it can get crowded; Quinta da Regaleira has an Initiatic Well and tunnels to explore; Monserrate Palace is a neo-Arabic building with botanical gardens 3 kilometers from the center; or the National Palace of Sintra sits in the historical center. The driver knows which ones have shorter queues that day and adjusts accordingly.

After the palaces, the 4WD part begins. You ride through Azenhas do Mar, a town built on cliffs above the Atlantic, then take off-road paths to a viewpoint above Adraga Beach that most visitors can't reach without a vehicle like this one: the cliffs and ocean stretch out with Cabo da Roca visible in the distance. From there the route follows the coast through Guincho Beach and Boca do Inferno, a cliff formation where the sea enters through a hole, before reaching Cascais. The whole day runs seven hours. Bottled water and WiFi are on board. If you want lunch, the driver can stop at a traditional restaurant (you pay separately).

The driver speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, and children from age 7 can join. Specialized infant seats are available for younger children. You can return to Lisbon from Cascais by train using the same ticket that works on the coastal route, so the day doesn't end when the tour does.
