The Experience
We were already bouncing along a narrow road above Sintra when I realized how much I’d underestimated this place. The air smelled like eucalyptus and something sweet — maybe those famous travesseiros? Our guide, Miguel, grinned as he pointed out the crazy colors of Pena Palace poking through the mist. “You’ll see why kings hid here,” he said, then told us a story about a queen who escaped up these hills. Honestly, I was still catching my breath from the climb up to the Castle of the Moors — slippery old stones under my sneakers, wind tugging at my jacket. I think I laughed too loud when Miguel tried to teach us how to say “Quinta da Regaleira” properly (I definitely didn’t nail it).
Somewhere after Monserrate Palace, we left the crowds behind for real. The 4x4 rattled over gravel tracks that felt like they shouldn’t be legal — trees brushing both sides, sunlight flickering in and out. Lunch happened in Colares; we picked a tiny seafood place with blue tiles on the wall and ate clams so fresh they tasted like the ocean itself. There was this old man at another table reading his newspaper out loud — no idea what he was saying but it made everyone smile. Afterward, we drove toward Azenhas do Mar, where white houses cling to cliffs above crashing waves. The sea spray actually stung my face for a second.
Cabo da Roca came late in the day — westernmost point of Europe, wind so strong you had to lean into it or risk losing your hat (I almost did). Miguel just stood there looking out at nothing but blue and said something about feeling small in a good way. We finished rolling down toward Cascais as golden light hit the coast. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the subway back home.
