The Experience

I’ll admit, I thought Sintra would just be another pretty spot near Lisbon — but the train ride up already felt like a reset. Our guide, Joana, met us at the station with this big grin and a stack of pastel-colored tickets. She kept switching between English and Portuguese, waving at people she knew. It was early but the air smelled like wet stone and pine needles, which woke me up more than coffee.

Pena Palace looked even stranger in person — all those yellows and reds stacked on top of each other, almost cartoonish against the mist. We didn’t go inside (Joana said the lines get wild), but walking around the gardens was enough. There was this moment where we stopped to catch our breath (lots of uphill), and you could see down to the Moorish Castle and even out toward Cascais if you squinted. Some guy nearby was trying to impress his girlfriend by naming every building in sight. I just laughed — I barely remembered which way was north.

Later we wandered through Sintra’s old center. The streets are narrow and twisty; at one point I nearly tripped over a cat sleeping in a doorway. Joana insisted we try travesseiros from Piriquita — honestly, I’d never tasted anything so flaky and sweet at 10am before. She told us stories about poets hiding out here during revolutions; it made everything feel less like a museum and more like someone’s lived-in neighborhood.

Quinta da Regaleira was last — that place is straight-up weird in the best way. Mossy towers, underground tunnels, symbols everywhere (I’m still not sure what half of them meant). The Initiation Well felt colder than outside; my hands actually tingled touching the damp stone as we spiraled down. Joana let us wander for a bit on our own after pointing out her favorite gargoyle (“He looks grumpy because he’s seen too many tourists,” she joked). Honestly, I could’ve stayed there for hours just poking around.

What’s included
