The Experience

“Wait, is that the elevator?” someone asked as we squinted up at the Santa Justa Lift from the shade of Rossio Square. Our guide, Anna, just grinned and told us to save our necks — we’d see it from above soon enough. I remember the tiles under my feet felt cool, even though the sun was already working overtime. We started weaving through Baixa’s straight streets, Anna pointing out old shop signs and explaining why Lisbon looks so different from other European cities — something about earthquakes and stubborn poets.

I didn’t expect to feel wind on my face up on the Santa Justa viewing platform. The city looked almost like a patchwork quilt from there, all those red roofs tumbling toward the river. Someone in our group tried to spot their hotel (no luck). When we wandered into Chiado, Anna shared a story about Fernando Pessoa — apparently he used to haunt these cafés. I’m not sure I understood every detail (my German’s rusty), but you could feel how much she loved this part of Lisbon. There was a pastry stop — sweet and sticky with cinnamon — and I’m still not sure what it was called. Tasted like home somehow.

Bairro Alto surprised me; so quiet in daylight you’d never guess it turns wild at night. Anna waved at an old man watering his plants on a balcony and he actually waved back — people here seem to notice you if you look up. The climb was real (bring water), but São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint made up for it: trams rattling below, sunlight bouncing off tiled walls, everyone pausing just long enough for a photo or two before drifting off again.

Alfama felt like another world: laundry overhead, alleys twisting in ways that made zero sense on Google Maps. At Miradouro de Santa Luzia we lingered longer than planned — blue-and-white tiles everywhere and that lazy river light over the Tejo. By the time we reached Praça do Comércio with its huge arch and open space by the water, my legs were tired but my head was full of stories I hadn’t expected to care about so much. Still thinking about that breeze up by the elevator…

What’s included
