3h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Cross Afonso de Albuquerque square
  • Try famous Pastéis de Belém
  • Visit Santa Maria di Belém church
  • Contemplate Jerónimos Monastery
  • See Monument to the Discoveries
  • Meet at Belém Tower and learn history

The Experience

We met our Italian guide right in front of the Belém Tower — she waved at us with a grin and started chatting away before we’d even finished our coffees. The group was small, mostly Italians (and me, trying to keep up), but everyone had that kind of relaxed curiosity you get when you’re somewhere new. We walked across the square dedicated to Afonso de Albuquerque, and honestly, I’d never heard of him before, but our guide made his story sound like something out of a movie — all ships and impossible journeys. There was this salty breeze coming off the river that made my hair stick up.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much about pastry. When we stopped at Pastéis de Belém, it was packed inside but somehow our guide got us a table. She explained how they’ve been making these custard tarts since 1837 — secret recipe and all that. Warm pastry, cinnamon dusted on top, sweet and just a bit eggy… I still think about that first bite. Some local kids were arguing over who got the biggest tart; their mom just rolled her eyes and smiled at us.

The Jerónimos Monastery looked almost unreal up close — all those Manueline carvings twisting around each other. Inside the church of Santa Maria di Belém it was quieter than I expected; light slanting through stained glass and a faint smell of old stone and wax. Our guide pointed out Vasco da Gama’s tomb and told us why this place matters so much to Lisbon’s history (I’ll admit I zoned out for a second just staring at the ceiling). Then outside again, sun on our faces as we wandered toward the Monument to the Discoveries — huge stone figures looking out over the water like they’re waiting for something.

At one point we talked about Ulysses — not the Greek hero but apparently a rhinoceros who was one of Europe’s first! That part caught me off guard. It’s funny how these tours always have one weird detail that sticks with you more than anything else. Anyway, by then my feet were tired but I didn’t really want it to end yet.

What’s included

Your day includes a guided walking tour in Italian through Lisbon’s Belém district with stops at historic squares, entry into Santa Maria di Belém church at Jerónimos Monastery, time to taste Pastéis de Belém fresh from their original bakery since 1837—all led by an Italian native guide who brings local stories to life along every step.
