The experience

The tour starts in Baixa with a fireman's chorizo and a warm bifana pork sandwich at a no-frills tavern where regulars have gathered for decades, paired with a glass of wine or beer. From there you walk through Largo de São Domingos, one of the oldest squares in the district, where your guide points out the marks that fires, earthquakes and revolutions have left on the buildings. The route then takes you to Lisbon's longest-running Mozambican kitchen, where Portuguese samosas and recipes tracing centuries of trade between Portugal and East Africa sit alongside another glass of wine or beer.

The second half moves into Mouraria, the neighborhood where Fado music was born. You walk through narrow streets and a back lane filled with striking murals celebrating local residents and the area's living history. Inside a traditional Fado house steeped in the city's music history, you try a chilled octopus salad and Bacalhau à Brás (Portugal's beloved shredded cod and egg dish) with a final glass of wine or beer. The tour finishes with a warm pastel de nata, the Portuguese custard tart with a crackling caramelized top, at a neighborhood pastelaria loved by locals.

Groups stay small at 12 guests maximum, which means room for questions and conversation without the noise of a larger crowd.
