The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the way our driver, João, grinned as he waved us into the tuk tuk outside our Lisbon hotel. There was this faint smell of roasted chestnuts in the air — or maybe it was just my imagination. We bumped through Graça and Mouraria — honestly, I’d never have found these neighborhoods alone. At Miradouro das Portas do Sol, João parked so we could stare out over the red roofs and river. It was quieter than I expected up there; just some old men playing cards nearby and a stray cat weaving between benches. The Lisbon Cathedral looked almost golden in that late morning light. My partner kept trying to snap photos but gave up after a while — sometimes it’s better to just sit there, you know?

The tuk tuk rattled down towards Belém on our longer route (we picked the 4-hour option), past trams clanging along cobbles and kids chasing pigeons in Rossio Square. The Jerónimos Monastery is even more detailed up close — all those stone carvings look like they’d crumble if you touched them. I tried not to think about how many centuries had passed since someone built that place. We ended near Belém Tower with pastel de nata crumbs on our fingers (João insisted we try one). Still think about that view from Senhora do Monte though — Lisbon spread out like a faded quilt beneath us.
