“You know you’re in Lisbon when your guide—ours was João—greets you with that half-grin and a ‘Bom dia!’ before you even climb into the tuk tuk. He asked if we’d ever tried pastéis de nata (we hadn’t), and then just shrugged and said, ‘We’ll fix that.’ We zipped straight into Alfama’s maze—honestly, I lost track of which way was up after the second turn.
