The Experience
“You know you’re in Lisbon when your guide—ours was João—greets you with that half-grin and a ‘Bom dia!’ before you even climb into the tuk tuk. He asked if we’d ever tried pastéis de nata (we hadn’t), and then just shrugged and said, ‘We’ll fix that.’ We zipped straight into Alfama’s maze—honestly, I lost track of which way was up after the second turn. The streets are so tight I could’ve high-fived a woman hanging laundry from her window. She actually waved at us instead. I still think about her smile.
João kept pointing out things I would’ve missed: old azulejo tiles chipped at the edges, a tiny Fado bar where his uncle apparently sings on Thursdays (he swears he doesn’t sing himself). The tuk tuk rattled along toward the Portas do Sol Viewpoint—suddenly there’s this sweep of rooftops tumbling down to the river. It was windy up there, but not cold; just enough to smell someone grilling sardines nearby. My hair was a mess in every photo but João insisted on taking them anyway. That spot really sticks with me.
We rolled through Baixa and Chiado next—João told stories about earthquakes and poets while dodging trams (those bells are loud up close). When we reached Belém, he let us decide: Jerónimos Monastery or Belém Tower first? We picked the monastery because it looked like something from another century. Inside was cool and echoey; outside, street musicians played under the trees. At some point I realized I’d stopped checking my phone for directions or time—just letting the city unfold around us.
The tour finished near Commerce Square, golden light bouncing off yellow buildings and pigeons everywhere. João offered one last pastel de nata (I took it), then pointed out where to find more if we wandered back later. Four hours went by fast—I left feeling like I’d actually met Lisbon instead of just ticking off sights. Not sure I could retrace our route if I tried… but maybe that’s part of it.
