The Experience
I’ll admit it—climbing into a tuk-tuk in Lisbon felt a bit silly at first. The driver, Miguel, grinned and said “Hold tight!” just before we zipped off into Alfama’s maze. The streets there are so narrow I could’ve touched the blue tiles on the houses if I’d leaned out (don’t do that). It was early but already warm; you could smell coffee drifting from open windows and hear someone practicing Fado guitar behind a cracked door. Our tuk-tuk rattled up to the Lisbon Cathedral—Miguel pointed out where the stone was blackened from an old fire. I’d never have noticed.
We stopped at Portas do Sol viewpoint and honestly, the view over Alfama’s rooftops made me go quiet for a second. There’s something about seeing the Tagus River glinting below that makes you forget your phone exists. At Senhora do Monte, a little breeze picked up and carried this faint scent of grilled sardines from somewhere down the hill—Miguel said it was almost lunchtime and winked like he knew a secret. He told us stories about São Vicente de Fora Monastery and how his grandmother used to shop at Campo de Ourique Market before it got trendy. I tried to pronounce “Jerónimos” right; he laughed but didn’t correct me.
Later we rolled through LX Factory—so much street art I lost count—and then on to Belém Tower and that big Monument to the Discoveries by the river. The tuk-tuk tour covered so much ground I stopped keeping track of neighborhoods; it all blurred together in a good way. We finished at Time Out Market Lisboa where Miguel insisted we try pastéis de nata—still warm, flaky, sweet enough to make you close your eyes for a second. That taste is stuck in my head now whenever someone mentions Lisbon.
