The Experience

“You ever ridden in a tuk tuk?” That’s how our guide João greeted us — grinning like he already knew we hadn’t. We squeezed in (six of us, somehow) and rattled off from Campo de Ourique Market, past stalls where the air smelled like coffee and grilled sardines. João waved at an old lady selling pastel de nata and she actually waved back. I tried to say “obrigado” properly; he laughed and said I sounded Spanish. Fair enough.

The tuk tuk zipped through Alfama’s tightest corners — honestly, I don’t know how he didn’t scrape the walls — while João pointed out tiled houses and told stories about fado singers who lived there. At Portas do Sol, we stopped for a view over the red roofs. It was windy, seagulls everywhere, sunlight bouncing off the river. Someone played guitar nearby but not for tourists, just for himself. The city felt kind of timeless right then.

We got to pick our route — historic or trendy or something about discoveries (I still can’t remember all the names). We chose Chiado because someone wanted to see bookshops. Ended up at a tiny café where João ordered bica for everyone (“Lisbon espresso — you’ll never sleep again,” he joked). The coffee was strong enough to wake up my ancestors. After that, we rolled down Bica’s steep street, brakes squeaking. It was loud but in a good way — people shouting greetings across balconies, laundry flapping above us.

I kept thinking how different Lisbon feels when someone local shows you around — not just monuments but small things: a shortcut through Bairro Alto, or why some tiles are blue instead of green (apparently it’s a whole thing). The tour ended wherever we wanted; João dropped us near Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara so we could linger longer. I still think about that view sometimes when I hear seagulls back home.
