The experience

You start in central Lisbon (either picked up from your hotel or meeting the guide at an agreed point), and climb into an open-sided electric tuk-tuk designed for comfort and low emissions. The guide drives and narrates, moving through the city's oldest and most layered neighborhoods without the noise or distance of a bus. Commerce Square, where the Royal Palace stood before the 1755 earthquake, anchors the first stop. From there the route threads into Alfama, where narrow streets, traditional Fado houses and hand-painted tiles create the feeling of stepping backward in time. The tuk-tuk's open design means you see the details (the ceramic facades, the laundry strung between buildings, the way light falls on stone) rather than watching from a window.

The tour moves through Graça, one of Lisbon's seven hills, and stops at Senhora do Monte Viewpoint, where the city spreads below you toward the Tagus River. You also visit São Pedro de Alcântara Viewpoint, which frames the Castle of Saint George and the historic center. Chiado, the district rebuilt after a 1988 fire and now filled with cafés and galleries, appears in the route, as does Largo do Carmo, the square central to the 1974 Carnation Revolution. The Belém district (the monumental heart of Portugal's Age of Discoveries) comes next: you see Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower from outside (entry tickets are separate), and the Monument to the Discoveries, shaped like a three-sailed ship and carved with figures of Vasco da Gama, Camões and King Manuel I. Tastings happen throughout the five hours. You try Pastel de Nata, the creamy custard tart that defines Portuguese pastry; codfish cakes, savory and fried; and Ginja, the dark cherry liquor that locals drink from small glasses. The tuk-tuk carries blankets for cooler weather, and the transparent cover rolls up in good weather or closes if rain comes. You view both Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower from outside during the tour. Entry tickets to either site are not included and cost extra if you want to go inside. The guide will show you the exteriors and explain their history and architecture.

What happens if it rains during the five hours?

The eco tuk-tuk has a transparent side cover that can be rolled up in good weather. If it rains or turns cold, the cover closes to keep you dry and warm, and blankets are provided on the vehicle.

How many people can ride in one tuk-tuk, and are children allowed?

A maximum of six people ride in one vehicle. Children 6 years old and under cannot legally ride. Children from 7 to 12 years old or at least 1.35 meters (4.42 feet) tall can ride on a booster seat if you request one beforehand. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Is hotel pickup included, and can we arrange a different meeting point?
