The Experience

First thing I noticed in Jardim do Príncipe Real was how everyone seemed to know our guide — Alex waved at three people before we’d even finished introductions. The garden smelled faintly of wet earth (it had rained earlier), and someone’s dog kept circling our group. We started off with a story about the monument to victims of homophobia right there, which felt heavier than I expected — but then Alex cracked a joke about “Lisbon’s most persistent pigeons” and somehow it was okay to smile again. I’d read about queer history tours before, but this one felt more like wandering with friends who just happen to know all the wildest stories.

Bairro Alto was louder than I thought it’d be for a weekday afternoon. We passed old dance venues where you could almost hear echoes of last night’s music if you stopped long enough (I tried — probably just my imagination). There were stops that surprised me: Lisbon Pride starting in this very square, drag queens after the revolution, Josephine Baker hiding secrets in her bra during WWII. Alex told us about the first lesbian bar — O Gato Verde — and mimed how journalists used to try sneaking in. Someone asked about cruising in the 1950s parks and Alex just grinned, “That’s another story for another corner.” The queer history walking tour really did wind through so many corners I’d never have found alone.

I didn’t expect to get emotional outside Igreja de São Roque, but hearing about lesbian nuns and 19th-century scandals (Marquis of Valada naked with a soldier?!) made me realize how much is hidden behind these old walls. By the time we reached Late Birds Hotel for that last drink — pool glinting out back, everyone sort of leaning closer together — it felt like we’d all been let in on something special.
