The Experience
You meet at Casa dos Bicos, a 16th-century mansion that survived the 1755 earthquake, and from there the walk traces the old city walls toward São Jorge. The route passes through what was once Lisbon's Jewish Quarter, then descends into Alfama itself—a maze of alleys and interior patios that opens onto hidden squares and stairways. Your guide points out the Roman salting tanks at the Cetária and explains how the thermal waters that drew settlers here became known as "Al-Hamma" when the Moors arrived. The labyrinth is real: narrow passages open onto tiny courtyards, and the streets double back on themselves in ways that make the quarter feel separate from the modern city outside it.
The Lisbon Cathedral comes next, a 12th-century building that has been rebuilt and modified so many times it carries traces of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque all at once. You enter with the group and the guide walks you through the interior; afterward, you climb to the Portas do Sol belvedere for views across the Tagus and back over the rooftops you just walked through. The Cathedral is included in the price, so there's no separate ticket to buy at the door.
The tour moves through the Baixa District on the way back, and your guide uses the time to talk about how the neighborhoods fit together—where the Romans saw opportunity, where the Moors built, where the fishermen lived and where Fado music took root. You'll get recommendations for the rest of your stay in Lisbon. The whole walk is three hours; the pace is steady but not rushed, and the guide adjusts for the group.

What exactly is Alfama and why does the tour spend so much time there?
Alfama is Lisbon's oldest quarter, a dense neighborhood of narrow alleys, interior patios and hidden stairways that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The tour spends most of its time there because it is where the city's layered history is still visible—Roman thermal waters, Moorish influence, the former Jewish Quarter, and the birthplace of Fado music all occupy the same few blocks, and walking through it is how you understand how those layers sit on top of each other.
Do I need to climb a lot of stairs on this walking tour?
The tour includes stairways and uneven terrain as part of moving through Alfama's layout, but it is suitable for all physical fitness levels according to the operator. The pace is steady and the guide can advise on alternatives if you have concerns; the group size stays small enough that adjustments are possible.
Is the Lisbon Cathedral entry included in the price, or do I pay separately?
Cathedral entry and a guided tour inside are included in the tour price; you do not buy a separate ticket. Liability and personal accident insurance are also included.
What language will my guide speak?
The tour is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and German. You choose your language when you book; a minimum of 2 people per booking is required.
Can I bring children on this tour?
Children are welcome from age 1. The tour involves walking and some stairs, so consider your child's comfort with uneven terrain and the pace of a group walk.
How does this tour cover so much history in three hours?
The guide connects the neighborhoods geographically—you walk from Casa dos Bicos through Alfama to the Cathedral and São Jorge's castle grounds, and each stop or street explains a layer of Lisbon's past. Rather than stopping at many separate sites, the walk itself is the story, with the guide pointing out Roman remains, Moorish influence, the old Jewish Quarter and the origins of Fado as you move through the same streets where those histories happened.
