The experience

If you've just landed or have a free afternoon in Lisbon, this tour moves through the city's layers without you having to navigate them. A van picks you up from your hotel and a guide who knows the neighborhoods takes you through the narrow streets of Alfama (the oldest part of the city, a maze of pitched rooftops and hidden courtyards), then into Baixa, the grid of squares rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake by the Marquis of Pombal. You stop at Largo do Carmo, where the Carmo Church still stands as a ruin from that same earthquake, and where the last Portuguese dictator was arrested during the 1974 revolution.

The route then heads west to Belem, the neighborhood where Portugal's Age of Exploration began. You see the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), which honors Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, and the other navigators who sailed out in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Jerónimos Monastery is where Vasco da Gama is buried, and the Belém Tower (a 500-year-old fortification on an island in the Tagus River) marks where those ships left the harbor. At a historic bakery dating back to 1837, you taste a Pastéis de Belém, the original custard tart whose recipe is known only to six people. The guide explains the local way to eat it.

On the way back, you cross the 25th of April Bridge (a suspension bridge often compared to the Golden Gate), and stop at the Christ the King statue, a monument built in 1959 to give thanks for Portugal's escape from World War II. From the base, the view stretches across the city and the Tagus River. The tour also includes the Senhora do Monte viewpoint, where you can see São Jorge Castle, and passes through Chiado, the expensive old-town district filled with cafés, bookstores, and theaters.
