The Experience

Ever wondered what it’s like to get lost in Alfama and not really care? That was me, trailing behind our Italian guide as she waved us into another crooked alleyway. The air smelled faintly of grilled sardines — even at 10am, which I didn’t expect — and someone’s radio was playing fado somewhere above us. We stopped at the Church of Our Lady of the Old Conception; I still remember how the Manueline carvings looked in the morning light, all tangled stone and strange faces. Our guide pointed out a tiny esoteric symbol tucked into the facade. I probably would’ve missed it if she hadn’t laughed and said, “Guarda qui!”

We passed by Casa dei Becchi (now the Saramago Foundation), and she told us about José Saramago winning the Nobel Prize — her voice got a bit softer there, almost proud. Then there was this old 13th-century fountain that honestly looked like it belonged in a fairy tale, chipped but still running. The main keyword here is “Alfama walking tour” but honestly, it just felt like wandering with a friend who knew every story on every corner.

The Lisbon Cathedral came next — massive, echoing inside, with sunlight slanting through dusty windows. There were people lighting candles, and it smelled sharp and sweet all at once. I tried to pronounce “Sé de Lisboa” properly; our guide grinned but didn’t correct me (maybe out of kindness). After that we made our way to the Church of St. Anthony — apparently he’s “our” saint too if you’re Italian — and then up to Santa Luzia Viewpoint. Those blue azulejos tiles really are as beautiful as everyone says, but what got me was the view: roofs tumbling down to the river, seagulls yelling overhead. It was windy up there; my hair kept blowing into my mouth.

I think my favorite part might’ve been Graça Viewpoint though — you can see straight across to São Jorge Castle from there. The sun was starting to dip by then, so everything looked golden and kind of unreal. We ended near São Vicente de Fora Monastery (built by an Italian architect!), which felt oddly fitting after hearing so much Italian spoken all day. I’m still thinking about those narrow streets and how our group lingered just a little longer than planned.
