The experience

The tour starts with a morning transfer from Iquitos airport or your hotel to the pier, where you board a boat for the Nanay River. The ride takes you to the Amazon itself, stopping first at Fundo Pedrito: a breeding ground where you feed and observe piranhas, caimans, turtles, macaws, anacondas and the giant Victoria Regia water plant. After lunch at the lodge, you walk to the Mirador, a 26-meter observation tower, then move into the canopy circuit: five ziplines, two suspension bridges, and a rappel descent (maximum weight 100 kg). A botanical walk or canoe paddle with a native guide follows, where you learn which plants the local communities use for food, medicine and tools. Dinner is at 7:00 PM, and a night hike or canoe trip takes you out to spot tarantulas, spiders, scorpions and nocturnal birds.

Day two starts before sunrise. You hike to watch birds at dawn, return for breakfast at 8:00 AM, then visit the Yaguas indigenous community (one of 23 native groups on the Amazon) to see traditional songs, dances, hunting methods and crafts. A separate excursion to a wildlife reserve lets you observe monkeys, macaws, sloths, the prehistoric mata mata turtle and boa constrictors. Lunch is at 1:00 PM. Checkout is at 12:30 PM and the return transfer to Iquitos departs at 2:30 PM, arriving around 4:00 PM. Bring or buy rubber boots at the lodge for the jungle walks.
