The experience
The Yarapa River eco-lodge sits four hours downriver from Iquitos in a remote pocket of the Amazon where the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve protects the forest and its animals. You arrive by boat transfer, then stay in a private bungalow equipped with basic hotel amenities in the middle of the jungle. The lodge runs all-inclusive packages built around daily expeditions: guided walks on jungle trails where you search for sloths, tarantulas and snakes in their habitat, and boat trips on the Yarapa and Ucayali rivers where pink and gray river dolphins, caimans and otters surface near the water's edge. The guide is a local expert who knows where animals move through the forest and when they feed.
Each day follows a rhythm of early exploration, meals at the lodge, and afternoon or evening river trips. You'll have the option to swim in the Amazon and Ucayali rivers if you want to enter the water yourself. One day includes piranha fishing and a session learning about medicinal plants used in the forest. Jungle boots are provided so you can walk the wet forest floor without damage to your own shoes. Bottled water, lunch and dinner come with the package through your final day, and the lodge handles all the logistics of getting you there and back to Iquitos.
The tour is designed around responsible tourism that minimizes impact on the forest and its wildlife. You're in close contact with rare animals in one of Earth's most biodiverse regions, but the lodge and the guide work to keep that contact sustainable. The three-day length gives you enough time to move deeper into the forest and return without rushing the experience.
