The experience
The tour picks you up at 8:00 a.m. from Iquitos airport or your hotel and begins at Belén Market, where you taste anticucho de suri, a traditional suri ant delicacy, and walk past medicinal plants and Amazonian fish stalls. From there, a canoe ride on the Nanay and Amazon rivers puts pink and gray river dolphins within reach, and a stop at the Chullachaki Ecomuseum covers Ayahuasca traditions and jungle cosmovision before you reach Yanayacu Eco Lodge for the night.
Day two starts at 5:00 a.m. with a dawn canoe ride to catch the rainforest waking up. Exotic birds, ceiba and kapok trees towering overhead, monkeys and sloths moving through the canopy. An ethnobotanical hike follows breakfast, then a hearty lunch. The optional camping night means a barbecue dinner by firelight, Amazonian stories, and a nighttime walk hunting for tarantulas and other insects. Day three breaks down the campsite and pivots to piranha fishing (you actually cast for these fish, known for their teeth and their taste), then a visit to the Yanayacu Timicuro farming community to watch traditional weaving and learn how locals live inside the forest. A canoe ride under stars closes the day.
Day four takes you to Monkey Island, a primate rescue center where you observe and interact with rescued monkeys in their habitat, then to a traditional Yagua community to watch handcrafted weaving and an authentic Yagua dance. A swim in the Amazon River comes before lunch and the return to Iquitos by 5:00 p.m., with transport to your hotel or airport included. The guide is live and speaks English or Spanish. Rubber boots, mineral water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and three nights at the jungle lodge are all included.
