The experience

The tour starts with airport pickup and a boat ride to the lodge, where you settle in before an afternoon canoe ride with a native guide who points out the plants the local communities use and depend on. At nightfall you walk or paddle through the jungle to spot tarantulas, spiders and nocturnal animals, listening for owls and the calls of tree frogs. Dinner and an overnight stay at the lodge follow.

Day two is built around the pink dolphins. You're up at 4:30 am for a dawn excursion to watch the sunrise and observe the birds of the area in their full colors. In the afternoon you can try piranha fishing the traditional way the indigenous communities practice it, or swim in the Amazon River itself. The main event is the dolphin observation. You'll see both pink and grey dolphins moving through the river. Another night at the lodge.

On the final morning you trek to La Ceiba de la Selva, a tree nearly 500 years old that towers 160 feet high. After breakfast and the trek, you check out at 12:30pm, have lunch, then travel back downriver for about an hour to reach Iquitos airport by 4pm. The guide speaks English or Spanish throughout, and all entrance fees, activities and transport between the lodge and Iquitos are included.
