The experience
You arrive in Iquitos and get picked up for the boat ride into the Amazon. The lodge sits on the Yanayacu River, and the first day moves between water and forest: a cruise to spot pink dolphins (sightings are not guaranteed), a visit to Fundo Pedrito to see capybaras, caimans and giant arapaima, and a tour of a rescue center for monkeys and sloths. You'll stand beneath the Ceiba tree, which indigenous cultures call the Tree of Life. Two guided night walks happen on nights one and two, when the rainforest sounds change and nocturnal animals emerge.
Day two centers on the people and traditions of the Amazon. A sunrise birding excursion starts around 5:30am to catch macaws, herons, kingfishers and sloths in the early light. You visit the Yagua people to see their body paint and crafts, then fish for piranha in the river: the guide's team prepares your catch for lunch. The afternoon takes you to Yanayacu Timicuro village, a mestizo community where you learn about medicinal plants and the spiritual beliefs woven into daily life.
Day three is the farewell. A final dolphin-watching cruise heads toward Monkey Island, where you see a variety of monkey species, including the world's smallest. The boat ride back to Iquitos lets the rainforest settle as you leave. Airport or hotel drop-off ends the tour. Meals, purified water, coffee and tea are provided; a bilingual guide (English and Spanish) travels with you; rubber boots in various sizes are supplied; and evening WiFi is available at the lodge.

Is this one for you?The tour starts before dawn on day two for the sunrise birding cruise and includes two night walks, so you'll be up early and active after dark. Plan for a full-day rhythm rather than a leisurely pace. The boat rides and village visits suit most fitness levels, and children from age 5 travel comfortably, but the early starts and evening activity mean you're making the most of each day in the rainforest.
