The experience
The tour starts with airport pickup in Iquitos and a boat ride to the lodge, with a guide pointing out the city and its surroundings on the way. After lunch, you canoe through the jungle with a professional native guide who shows you the plants the local people use and the animals that live among them. At nightfall, a guided walk or canoe through the jungle lets you spot tarantulas, spiders, praying mantis and nocturnal animals by their calls: owls and the distinctive "ayaymamas" that give the Amazon its soundscape.
Day two starts before dawn at 4:30 am to watch the sunrise and observe birds in their full activity. You then visit the Yaguas, one of 23 indigenous communities in the Amazon, and explore a reserve where monkeys live freely. After lunch comes piranha fishing in the traditional way the local communities practice it, and a swim in the Amazon River itself. The afternoon focuses on pink and grey dolphins. You'll watch them move through the river and see their behavior up close.
The third day is a full-day jungle expedition. You travel by boat along the Amazon and its tributaries to San Juan de Huachalado, hiking and fishing along the way. The guide points out the Lupuma, a famous giant tree, and the Tarzan lianas that hang from the canopy. Lunch happens at a villager's home or a jungle camp. You also visit a trapiche, a traditional distillery where locals make and serve the region's alcoholic beverages. On the final morning, you trek to La Ceiba de la Selva, a ceiba tree nearly 500 years old and 160 feet tall, before checking out at 12:30 pm and returning to Iquitos by boat. About an hour on the river, arriving around 4 pm.
