The experience

Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve sits three hours from Iquitos by road and speedboat. The lodge is a private ecolodge with ensuite rooms where you sleep all four nights. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and stays with you for the full tour, which means the pace and the stops are yours to shape. If you want to fish longer or skip the medicinal plant walk, you decide. The reserve holds over 500 bird species, more than 10 monkey species, sloths, caimans, capybaras, anacondas and pink dolphins, though seeing any particular animal is never guaranteed.

Each day runs the same rhythm: early boat exploration (5–6 hours with breakfast on board), lunch at the lodge, an afternoon excursion by boat or walk, and dinner followed by a choice of evening activity. Day one is arrival and a first jungle walk plus a night boat run. Day two includes optional swimming with dolphins in the Amazon River and a sunset boat ride across giant lily pads. Day three takes you to Lake Yarina in primary jungle and includes a survival skills lesson: how to build shelter, find water and identify food in the forest. Day four is a final morning walk and village visit before the return speedboat to Iquitos, arriving around 4 p.m.
