The experience

The Caves of Hercules sit at the heart of this route: a sea cave with two openings, one to land and one to the sea, where the ocean entrance forms the shape of Africa when viewed from the water. A Phoenician creation, the cave anchors a morning that also takes in Cape Spartel, a lighthouse built by Sultan Mohammed III in 1864 and perched on a cliff at the far north of the African continent, with views across the Strait of Gibraltar toward Spain less than 15 kilometers away. The Tangier Kasbah, a 15th-century Portuguese military fortification on the city's highest ground, overlooks the medina's maze of alleyways: both commercial and residential streets contained within the fortress walls.

After Tangier, the route heads 46 kilometers south to Asilah, a smaller coastal city with roots stretching back to the Roman era. The visit there takes in the Kasbah, Raisouli Palace, the medina's small alleys, a farmers market and artisan shops, the fishing port, and Paradise Beach. Whitewashed walls throughout the old town display local artwork. The Perdicaris estate, a 70-hectare forest and historical site near Tangier, rounds out the day: a former home of a Greek-born American diplomat who settled there in 1872, now a natural and cultural landmark mixing sea, mountain, and forest.

Private transportation is included throughout, and your guide speaks English, French, or Arabic. The full day runs seven hours, so plan to start early and bring water and sun protection for the outdoor stops.

What is the Caves of Hercules and why is it called that?

The Caves of Hercules is a sea cave with two openings: one to the land and one to the sea. The ocean opening is shaped like the African continent when viewed from the water, a form the Phoenicians are believed to have created. Local legend connects it to the mythological figure Hercules.

Can I see Spain from Cape Spartel?

Yes. Cape Spartel is a lighthouse built in 1864 on a cliff at the far north of the African continent, and the Strait of Gibraltar lies less than 15 kilometers away, so the Spanish coast is visible from the top.

How far is Asilah from Tangier and how long does the drive take?

Asilah is about 46 kilometers from Tangier, roughly a 45-minute drive south along the coast.

What will I see in Asilah's medina?

Asilah's medina is a maze of small alleys in the old town, with whitewashed walls filled with local artwork, a farmers market, artisan shops, the fishing port, and historical landmarks including the Kasbah, Raisouli Palace, and several towers and gates dating back centuries.

Is lunch included in this day trip?

Lunch is not included. You'll have time to eat at a restaurant or café in either Tangier or Asilah, but you'll need to arrange and pay for it separately.
