The Experience

I opened my eyes to the sound of an old VW Beetle engine—honestly, I grinned. Our guide, Javier, waved from behind a camera lens (he’s a photographer too), and it felt like we were about to film our own road movie. The drive from Cancun to Chichen Itza was longer than I expected—almost three hours—but the windows down made the air feel less sticky. Javier pointed out tiny villages along the way; I remember the smell of tortillas drifting in through the window somewhere near Valladolid. He told us how Chichen Itza isn’t just one era—it’s layers of Mayan history stacked on each other. I tried to repeat one of the Mayan names for a temple and totally failed. Javier just laughed and snapped a photo.

The sun hit hard at Chichen Itza but there was this weird hush around El Castillo when we arrived early—like everyone was holding their breath. Javier showed us both the old and newer parts of the site (I didn’t realize they’re so different). He explained how people used to travel here for ceremonies; it made me see all those stones as more than just ruins. Afterward, we drove out to a cenote—he let us pick which one based on whether we wanted adventure or something calmer. I went for calm but still yelped when my toes hit that cold blue water. Floating there with sunlight filtering down felt unreal. My hair still smelled faintly of limestone hours later.

Lunch wasn’t included but that turned out better—I got to choose street tacos instead of sitting in some touristy place (Javier knew which stall had cochinita pibil worth lining up for). We peeked into a kitchen where women patted out tortillas by hand; their laughter echoed louder than our Spanish attempts. By late afternoon we rolled into Valladolid—the colors on those colonial buildings looked almost fake against the sky. We wandered slowly through shaded squares and ended up with cold drinks by the cathedral steps, watching kids chase pigeons while locals chatted nearby. The drive back was quieter; maybe tiredness or maybe just letting it all sink in.
