The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the sun hit the Pyramid of Kukulkan—soft gold, not yet burning. We’d left Playa del Carmen when it was still half-dark, and honestly, I dozed off in the van. But stepping onto those ancient stones with just a handful of other early risers around… it felt like we’d wandered into some secret hour. Our guide, Jorge, started telling us about the ball court’s echoes and I tried clapping—he grinned, said everyone does that. The air smelled faintly dusty and green at once, which sounds weird but that’s how it was.

I didn’t expect to get so caught up in the stories—like how the Mayans tracked shadows on equinox days. Jorge pointed out tiny carvings I would’ve missed (I probably still missed some). After a while, heat started creeping in and we headed for one of those cenotes—ours was Samula. Walking down into that cool blue cave after sweating at Chichen Itza? Pure relief. The water was cold enough to make me yelp but also kind of magical—roots dangling from above, kids laughing somewhere behind me.

Lunch happened in Valladolid—a place I’d never heard of before this day trip to Chichen Itza from Cusco (well, not Cusco obviously but you know what I mean—I keep mixing up my trips). The restaurant had fans spinning lazily overhead and our server explained what “agua de chaya” was (I still don’t know if I liked it). Afterward we wandered around—the main square had old men playing dominoes under trees and a lady selling paletas who winked when I ordered mango.
