The Experience

You first hear it — the echo under the trees, some bird calling out over the stone. Chichen Itza is bigger than I pictured, even after all those photos online. Our guide, Daniel, started us off by clapping his hands near the Kukulkan Pyramid. The sound bounced back in this weird way, like a chirp. He grinned at us and said it was intentional — something about how the Maya designed it to mimic a sacred bird. I tried it too but just got awkward stares from another group (worth it). The sun was already sharp but there’s shade if you stick close to the columns. I kept touching the stones when nobody was looking — they’re cool and rough, not what I expected after so many years in the open.

After wandering through Chichen Itza’s ball court (it’s massive), we drove out toward Saamal Cenote. The air changed — wetter, almost sweet, and you could hear water before you saw it. I hesitated on the steps down; it's darker than you'd think inside, but once you’re in that cold water… wow. There’s this moment where everything goes quiet except for your own splashing and a few people laughing nearby. Some folks were nervous to jump in but ended up loving it. My hair still smelled faintly of minerals for hours afterward — not bad actually.

Ek Balam came later in the day and felt different from Chichen Itza — quieter, more tangled with trees around the ruins. Daniel told us we could climb up the Acropolis here (he called it “the big one”). So yeah, I went for it even though my legs were tired by then. The carvings at the top are wild — faces peeking out from stone mouths, almost cartoonish but also kind of haunting? The view is just trees forever, with little villages poking out here and there. We ended up swapping stories over lunch (buffet style — try anything with achiote if you can). Someone asked Daniel about his favorite ruin and he just laughed: “Depends on who’s asking.”
