The Experience

“You’ll want to see this before everyone else gets here,” our guide Mario grinned as we shuffled off the van at Chichen Itza. I was still half-asleep from the early start out of Playa del Carmen, but that first silence—no vendors yet, just birds and the sound of our shoes on old stones—woke me up fast. The main keyword for this tour is definitely “Chichen Itza day trip,” but honestly, it felt like we’d slipped in through a side door before the world arrived. Mario told us about the ball court (I didn’t realize how huge it was) and pointed out some faded red paint on one of the jaguar carvings. The air smelled dusty and green at the same time. We had three hours wandering around, and I still think about that view of Kukulkan when the sun finally crept over the top.

I’m not usually a big swimmer, but after sweating through Chichen Itza, that cenote—Hubiku—looked like something from another planet. Cold water under all those stalactites, echoey and blue. Some guy from our group did a cannonball and got yelled at by his girlfriend; everyone laughed. Lunch was right there too: buffet style, lots of things I couldn’t pronounce (I tried “cochinita pibil” and probably butchered it), but it tasted smoky and bright somehow. Mario sat with us and showed me how to eat these little tortillas with habanero salsa—he warned me twice but I still went for it. My mouth burned for twenty minutes.

Ek Balam was last, tucked into jungle so thick you could hear insects buzzing even in the heat. Not many people there—just us and a few locals selling woven bracelets by the entrance. Climbing the Acropolis pyramid felt harder than I’d guessed (my legs were shaking at the top), but wow… you can see treetops forever from up there. The carvings are wild too—jaguar mouths and winged figures that look straight out of someone’s dream. By then we were all sweaty again but nobody cared much anymore.
