A 32-foot boat carries you to waters where hundreds of whale sharks congregate each summer.

Swim with whale sharks in their natural habitat off Isla Mujeres on a six-hour snorkeling adventure that includes boat transport, a certified English or Spanish-speaking guide, snorkeling gear, lunch and drinks. The whale sharks are wild and free (not trained or caged), so sightings depend on conditions and their own movement, though the crew has a high success rate. You enter the water in pairs, each accompanied by a guide, and may get two chances to swim depending on sea state and shark activity.

The experience

The boat leaves from your choice of pickup point (Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Costa Mujeres, or Isla Mujeres itself), and heads north for roughly 50 minutes to reach the feeding grounds. From June through September, hundreds of whale sharks gather in the waters north of Isla Mujeres, forming the largest seasonal congregation of these fish anywhere on earth. The ride is smooth even in choppy water, and along the way you'll spot dolphins, manta rays and flying fish jumping across the surface.

Once you reach the whale shark zone, you enter the water in pairs, always with a certified guide at your side. The plan is two water entries, though sea conditions, the number of sharks present and your own swimming ability may shift that. You're snorkeling in their home, not visiting an attraction. The sharks are wild, not fed, and not guaranteed to appear, even with the crew's track record. What you get is the chance to be in the water alongside the largest fish on the planet, close enough to feel the scale of them moving through the Caribbean.

Lunch, snacks, bottled water and soft drinks are provided on the boat. Bring sunscreen for before and after the water. It's not permitted in the whale shark zone. A long-sleeve shirt is recommended for sun protection while you're in the sea. The environmental tax and dock fee of $10 USD per person is payable in cash on the day of your tour. If you want footage of yourself in the water, GoPro files are available for purchase.
