2 Tank Wreck & Drift Reef Dives: Isla Mujeres
Penetrate sunken minesweepers, then drift a reef full of life
A two-tank dive off Isla Mujeres pairs wreck exploration at 80 feet with a drift reef dive, suitable for Advanced Open Water divers or Open Water divers doing an Adventure Dive. The first tank takes you inside one of two penetrable wrecks — the C55 or C58, both Admirable-class minesweepers — where you navigate passages and chambers. The second tank drifts a vibrant reef where you encounter eels, turtles, nurse sharks, eagle rays and schools of reef fish. Dives depart at 7:30 a.m. or 1 p.m., and the guide speaks English or Spanish.
The Experience
What makes wreck diving different is the access: you don't just circle the outside. On these two wrecks off Isla Mujeres — the C55 (USS Ransom) and C58 (USS Harlequin) — you can penetrate the structure itself, moving through the interior of ships that sank decades ago. At 80 feet, you're deep enough that the light changes and the scale of the wreck becomes real. The passages are navigable, and the fish have claimed the space: you'll see green moray eels, larger fish than you find on shallow reefs, and schools moving through the holds.
After the wreck, the second tank shifts the dive entirely. You move to a drift reef where the current does the work — you float along the structure rather than fighting to stay in place. This is where the variety shows: nurse sharks, eagle rays (January through February), turtles, and the smaller reef fish that dart in and out of the coral. The drift means you cover more ground and see more of the reef's depth in a single dive.
The whole outing runs 4.5 hours from start to finish. You'll need to be an Advanced Open Water diver, or an Open Water diver ready to log this as an Adventure Dive — let the operator know when you book if you're doing the latter. The guide leads in English or Spanish, and children are welcome from age 16. Dives leave at 7:30 a.m. or 1 p.m., so you can pick the slot that fits your day.

What are the two wrecks I'll be diving on this trip?
The C55 and C58 are both Admirable-class minesweepers that now rest at 80 feet. The C55 is the former USS Ransom, and the C58 is the former USS Harlequin — both are penetrable, so you can swim inside the structure rather than just circling the outside.
Can I do this dive if I'm an Open Water diver, not Advanced?
Yes, if you log this as an Adventure Dive. Tell the operator when you book that you're an Open Water diver, and they'll set it up as an Adventure Dive experience rather than requiring Advanced certification.
What kind of marine life will I see on the reef dive?
The drift reef is home to nurse sharks, turtles, eels, schools of reef fish and larger pelagic fish. Eagle rays show up January through February. The drift current means you'll cover more reef in one dive and see a wider range of the ecosystem.
What time do the dives depart, and how long does the whole thing take?
Dives start at 7:30 a.m. or 1 p.m., and the full outing is 4.5 hours. You can choose whichever departure works with your schedule.
Is the guide in English?
The guide speaks English or Spanish, so you can pick the language when you book.
