A two-tank certified scuba dive in Galle combining the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) and Manchones Reef, both at 30 feet depth. The first tank takes you through Jason deCaires Taylor's submerged sculptures surrounded by schools of grunts, parrot fish, stingrays, turtles, eels and nurse sharks; the second explores a nearby reef site with the same abundance of coral and fish life. Dives run 4.5 hours total. All tanks, weights, park fees and a live guide in English or Spanish are included; children from age 10 can join.

The Experience

What makes the Underwater Museum different from a standard reef dive is the sculptures themselves—Taylor's art installations sit on the seafloor at 30 feet, colonized now by coral and fish that have turned the gallery into a living reef. You descend into that world on your first tank, moving through the sculptures while schools of grunts and rainbow parrot fish weave around them. Stingrays glide past, turtles graze, and nurse sharks patrol the site. The sculptures are the anchor; the marine life is what has claimed them.

Your second tank moves to Manchones Reef nearby, still at 30 feet, where the coral growth and fish schools are just as dense but without the art—a pure reef dive that shows you what the museum site is becoming. You'll navigate a swim-through and see the same cast of animals: barracudas hunting in formation, eels in the coral heads, more turtles and sharks. The whole outing takes 4.5 hours from shop to shop. You meet at 7:30 a.m. or 1 p.m., and the operator supplies tanks, weights, all park fees, water and snacks.
