You descend to two sites off Isla Mujeres' southern coast to dive among 450+ underwater statues and live coral reef. Your guide navigates you through MUSA and Manchones, pointing out turtles, rays, and tropical fish living in and around the sculptures. The Experience

"The statues are just the beginning," our dive master said as we suited up on the boat. "Wait until you see what's living around them." That stuck with me — because MUSA, the underwater museum off the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, isn't a museum in the traditional sense. It's a reef that's been deliberately sculpted, and it's become a working ecosystem. Over 450 statues sit on the seafloor, some of them decades old now, covered in coral and swarming with fish. You're not diving to a monument; you're diving into a living thing.

The two-tank dive at MUSA takes you to both the main statue field and Manchones reef, a section just nearby where more sculptures are scattered. Certified divers only — that's the requirement, and it matters because the sites sit at a depth where you need to know what you're doing. Pocna Dive Center, the only 5-star PADI IDC center on Isla Mujeres, handles the logistics: they provide all equipment, brief you on the sites, and keep groups small enough that you're not herded through. The boat leaves with fruit and water, and your entry fee includes a donation toward MUSA's upkeep and the new statues they keep adding. The whole thing takes most of your morning or afternoon, depending on when you book.

What you'll actually see down there — turtles moving through the statues like they own the place, rays gliding past, groupers and snappers and parrotfish doing what they do, corals growing over the sculptures — that's the real draw. The statues are eerie and beautiful, but they're also just the stage. The reef is the show.

What’s included

  • All SCUBA equipment is provided, along with fruit and water served on the boat during your surface interval.
  • Your entry fee includes a donation toward MUSA's ongoing conservation and the creation of new statues.
