Step-by-step itinerary
Swim with whale sharks and lunch
- Travel from Isla Mujeres to whale shark area
- Swim alongside whale sharks
- Sail back to Isla Mujeres Playa Norte
- Enjoy beachside lunch
The experience
The boat leaves Isla Mujeres and travels about an hour to reach the whale shark area in open water. Once there, you slip on snorkel gear and enter the water to swim alongside these fish, which can grow as long as 43 feet. The sharks are filter feeders and pose no threat. The real challenge is staying calm enough to take in what's happening a few feet away. How many you see depends on the day: the operators time the trip for summer months when they arrive in large numbers around the Yucatan Peninsula, but sightings vary with weather and ocean conditions.
After your time in the water, the boat heads back to Isla Mujeres Playa Norte. The return journey gives you time to dry off and process what you've just done. Once ashore, a beachside lunch waits: fresh fish ceviche, chicken sandwiches, snacks and coffee or tea. The whole outing runs 6 to 8 hours depending on conditions and how long you spend at the site.
Snorkel gear is provided, so you don't need to bring your own. A live guide speaks English or Spanish throughout the day. The activity does require at least moderate physical fitness and comfort in open ocean water. It's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant.
