Isla Mujeres snorkeling tour: Three coral reefs in one morning
Three reefs, three hours, one boat: Lighthouse, the Museum, Manchones
A snorkeling activity off Isla Mujeres that visits three coral reefs in a single morning: the shallow Lighthouse Reef, the Underwater Museum at the island's south point, and Manchones, the largest reef in the area. The boat carries snorkel gear, a live guide in English or Spanish, and serves ceviche and sandwiches on board. The activity runs three hours and includes admission to the natural reserve.
The Experience
The boat leaves from Isla Mujeres and heads first to Lighthouse Reef, a shallow coral formation where you start in clear water with schools of multi-colored fish moving through the corals. From there the route moves to the Underwater Museum at the island's south point — a site with submerged sculptures and coral growth that has turned it into a reef habitat. The final stop is Manchones, the largest coral reef in Isla Mujeres, where the depth and coral structure support a denser marine ecosystem. A live guide in English or Spanish leads the snorkeling at each site and explains what you are seeing in the water.
Snorkel gear is provided — a brand new tube, mask and fins — so you bring nothing but yourself. The boat carries bottled water, and between sites the crew serves a fresh local ceviche with chips and vegetables. A margarita rounds out the on-board meal. The whole activity runs three hours from start to finish, which is the window that lets you visit all three reefs without rushing the time at each one.
Admission to the natural reserve is included in the price. The tour departs from Isla Mujeres; if you are staying elsewhere on the Riviera Maya, you will need to arrange your own transport to the dock. Public transportation options are available nearby.
