The experience
Isla Mujeres is the departure point. You meet at the office in the center of town, walk to the dock, and board for the crossing to Contoy Island. The boat ride lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Once you arrive, a guide leads you through the island and its history, then you eat lunch: grilled fish (tikinxik) or chicken with rice, pasta and salad, in a palapa. You have 3 hours total on the island to move through both the guided portion and the meal.
After leaving Contoy, the boat makes a snorkeling stop on the Mesoamerican reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The captain decides whether conditions allow the stop. If weather or sea state rules it out, the snorkeling does not happen. Snorkeling equipment is included. The return to Isla Mujeres takes another 45 to 60 minutes, and the full day runs 6 hours from check-in to dock.
