The experience
Meet at the shop at 7:45 AM with juice and coffee, then walk to your boat and captain. The search for whale sharks and manta rays is a wildlife expedition in open water: sightings cannot be guaranteed because these are wild animals in their natural environment. The ride north takes 40 to 90 minutes depending on where the animals are located that day.
Once whale sharks are spotted, two guests at a time enter the water with a guide while others wait their turn onboard. You typically get two jumps into the water across the excursion, and a life jacket is required during all whale shark interactions. After the expedition, the boat stops at a reef where you snorkel with your own gear before heading to Playa Norte for lunch: sandwiches, fresh ceviche, and cold beverages included. Return to the island is typically between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM depending on weather and ocean conditions.
The ten-guest limit means more space onboard and a more personal experience than larger operations. Your captain and guides are local and experienced in locating the animals while following environmental regulations to protect them.
