The Experience

I didn’t expect the water off Cancun to look so clear—almost fake, like someone had dialed up the color. When we stepped onto the catamaran, I caught a whiff of sunscreen and salt in the air. Our guide, José, grinned at us and handed out fins with a joke about “mermaid feet.” He switched between Spanish and English so easily that I felt clumsy just trying to remember my high school phrases. The sun was already warm even though it wasn’t late yet. We pushed off, music low in the background, and I realized how much I’d needed this.

The snorkeling spot was maybe half an hour out—I lost track because I got distracted watching pelicans dive-bombing for fish. When it was my turn to slide into the water (awkward flippers and all), it hit me how alive everything felt down there. Fish darting everywhere, sunlight flickering through turquoise. José pointed out something—parrotfish?—but honestly I was too busy laughing into my snorkel because my mask kept fogging up. My partner tried to show me a shell but I just spluttered and nearly swallowed seawater. So yeah, not exactly Jacques Cousteau material.

Back on deck, chips and guac never tasted so good—maybe it’s just being hungry after swimming or maybe it’s that everything tastes better with sea air. The crew kept drinks coming (I stuck to soda after one too-strong margarita) and we drifted toward Isla Mujeres. Downtown is busier than you’d think for such a small island; scooters zipping past, shopkeepers waving from doorways. We had an hour or so to wander—the light was golden by then—and I bought a woven bracelet from a woman who told me her daughter made them after school. Wish I’d asked her name.

The ride back felt slower somehow—like nobody wanted it to end yet. There was this moment when everyone just went quiet watching the coastline come back into view. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you need silence until you get it out on the water like that.
