The Experience

The drive from Cancun takes roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes, depending on your hotel. Once you reach Akumal bay, you'll gear up with snorkeling equipment and enter the water to explore the Mesoamerican reef. The turtles move through this reef as part of their daily routine—you're entering their space, not a controlled tank—so encounters happen but are never certain. The guide stays with the group throughout and speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Dutch and other languages on request.

After snorkeling, the itinerary shifts to a cenote—a jungle pool surrounded by rock formations where an underground cave system opens up. You'll walk into a space carved by water over millennia, where stalactites and stalagmites catch the light filtering down through small openings in the cave roof. The cenote is a different kind of water experience: you're looking at geology and ancient formations rather than marine life, but it's the reason this trip runs a full day instead of a half-day snorkel-only outing.

The return drive to Cancun takes another 1 hour and 45 minutes. Bottled water and snacks travel with you, and the van has air conditioning. Children from age 4 are welcome. The activity is not recommended for people with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, and entry is not permitted for anyone under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.
