You’ll start your day in Cancun learning scuba basics in the pool before heading by boat to explore MUSA’s underwater sculptures and vibrant Manchones reef—all with an experienced local instructor. Expect laughter, salty skin, and a new way of seeing the world below the waves.
I’ll admit, I was nervous walking into the dive shop in Cancun—my hands were a little shaky filling out the medical form. But our instructor, Luis, just grinned and said, “You’ll see, it’s like learning to fly.” We started with this crash course in a small pool behind the shop. The wetsuit felt weird at first (kind of clammy), but after a few minutes floating face-down, I forgot about it. Breathing underwater for the first time? Honestly, it’s so strange you almost laugh. Luis kept giving us thumbs up and goofy signals until we all relaxed.
Once we got on the boat, the sea breeze hit me and I realized I’d forgotten to take motion sickness pills (don’t do what I did). The ride out to MUSA—the underwater museum—was maybe 30 minutes? Hard to tell because I was distracted by pelicans diving near the bow. Dropping down beside those sunken sculptures was surreal; there’s something quiet and almost eerie about seeing art where fish weave between arms and faces. My mask fogged up a bit from smiling too much, if that makes sense.
The second tank dive was at Manchones reef. This part felt more alive—schools of yellow fish darting everywhere, bits of coral brushing my hands when I wasn’t careful. Luis pointed out a tiny crab hiding in purple coral and tried to mime its name (I still have no idea what he meant). Coming up after that last dive, I remember just floating on my back for a minute, salt drying on my lips, thinking: okay, now I get why people fall in love with this.
Your day covers all scuba equipment—wetsuit, mask, fins—and starts with a theory session plus pool practice before heading out by boat for two guided dives at both MUSA Underwater Museum and Manchones reef. You’ll return to dock early afternoon feeling salty and satisfied.
