The guide is bilingual; snorkeling gear is included and certified by National Geographic.
Step-by-step itinerary
Whale shark swim and beach visit
- Pick up from hotel

- Board boat to whale shark area
- Swim with whale sharks in guided dives
- Visit Playa Norte beach in Isla Mujeres
- Relax and enjoy ceviche
- Return to marina in Cancun
- Transport back to hotel
The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your Cancun or Playa del Carmen hotel, followed by a light breakfast at the private marina in Punta Sam before heading out to the whale shark protected area. Once the boat reaches the zone, you'll enter the water in pairs with a certified guide for 2–3 dives, each one supervised closely. The whale sharks in these waters are filter feeders and move slowly, which is what makes the encounter possible — you're swimming alongside them, not chasing. The guide stays with you throughout and speaks both English and Spanish.
After the dives, the boat heads to Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, where you have an hour to snorkel in shallower water or simply rest on the sand. The crew prepares fresh ceviche on-site — this is the meal included with the trip, along with bottled water and soft drinks. The snorkeling gear you wear is sterilized and certified, so you're not bringing your own or renting separately.
The return journey takes you back to Punta Sam marina, where air-conditioned vans drop you at your hotel or condo. The whole outing runs 4–5 hours from pickup to drop-off. Keep in mind that while whale shark sightings are very likely in these waters during the season, they cannot be guaranteed — the activity is built around the encounter, but the ocean determines whether it happens on any given day.

What are whale sharks like when you're actually swimming next to them?
Whale sharks are the world's largest fish and filter feeders, meaning they eat plankton by swimming with their mouths open rather than hunting. They move slowly and predictably, which is why swimming alongside them in pairs with a guide is safe and possible. You'll be in the water at the same depth, watching them feed.
Do I need to be an experienced swimmer or certified diver to do this?
You don't need diving certification — this is snorkeling, not scuba. You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness and be comfortable in open water. Children from age 5 can join if accompanied by an adult. The guide stays with you the entire time.
What's included in the price besides the whale shark dives?
Hotel pickup and drop-off from most Cancun hotels, light breakfast at the marina, sterilized snorkeling gear certified by National Geographic, bottled water and soft drinks, a professional bilingual guide, and an hour at Playa Norte beach in Isla Mujeres with fresh ceviche and snacks prepared by the crew are all included.
How long does the whole trip take from hotel to hotel?
The activity runs 4–5 hours total, including pickup, breakfast, the dives, the beach stop in Isla Mujeres, and the return to your hotel. The actual time in the water is split across 2–3 dives per person.
What should I bring or wear?
Wear casual clothing and bring your swimsuit. Sunscreen, a hat and a light cover-up are smart choices since you'll be on the water and the beach. The snorkeling gear is provided, so you don't need to bring your own.
Is this trip available year-round?
Whale shark season in Cancun runs from mid-May through September, when the plankton blooms bring them to these waters. The tour operates during this window, though exact availability depends on the season and weather conditions.
