The experience

You arrive at the marina, check in at the ticket office, stow your belongings in a locker, and get fitted with snorkel equipment: mask, sterilized snorkel, flippers and vest. Your guide walks you through how the boat operates, explains the hand signals you'll use to communicate between boats, and leads you out onto the water. From there, the day is yours to navigate: you're piloting the boat, not watching from a passenger seat.

The route heads toward the Mayan Reef and Nichupté Lagoon, and you follow your guide in single file. You'll see the coastal area north of Cancun, then arrive at El Meco, part of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. This is where you enter the water to snorkel. Your guide stays with you the whole time, ready to help if you need it. After you've had time at the reef, you head back to the boats and cruise through Nichupté Lagoon itself: drifting through natural channels lined with mangroves, where you can spot exotic birds and other wildlife in their habitat.

Once you're back at the marina, you return the snorkel gear, shower if you want, and collect your things. The whole experience runs about two and a half hours from start to finish.
